Controversies usually spring up when it comes to
the yardstick of measuring the best universities in Nigeria. In case the
university you attended is not in this ranking, *just chill okay* that does not
mean you are not good or your certificated will be invalidated. I just feel
this is a call for action so that all the state and federal universities will
do the needful to getting the best structures on ground.This list reveals from top to the bottom.

1. The
Obafemi Awolowo University is a well structured public institution which is
believed to have been established in 1962 as The University of Ife. The University
is located on a vast expanse of land amounting to 11,861 hectares in Ile-Ife,
Osun State, southwest of Nigeria. In the 1970’s and the early 1980’s, this
University has attained a foremost position among universities in Africa, with
a vibrant academic and social atmosphere and a highly rated international
reputation. Today as we speak, the University celebrates a rich tradition of
excellence having produced, from among its staff, a Nobel Laureate and four
National Merit Award winners.
2. The Federal
University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, in Ogun State (FUNAAB) was established
on January 1st 1988 by the Federal Government. This happen when four
Universities of Technology merged in 1984, was demerged. The demerger led to
the creation of the first two Universities of Agriculture in Abeokuta and
Makurdi. In 2002 & 2003, the university was awarded the best
university in the country by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC)
consecutively. The establishment of the Universities of Agriculture was an
entirely new concept for promoting agricultural education and service for
agricultural development and attainment of self-sufficiency in food and fiber. This
university deserves its current position if you ask me.
3. University of Lagos was founded in 1962, the university over 4
decades, has provided quality and purposeful education to both Nigerian and its
neighbouring countries. The University has successively built a legacy of excellence
and has instrumentally produce top notch graduates and academia that have had
tremendous impact, directly or indirectly, on growth and development in this
country Nigeria.
4. University of Nigeria Nsukka also know as (UNN) is a top Nigerian
University that has successively produce top notch graduates who in more ways
than one have contributed to the development of this nation Nigeria. Her vision
to placing herself in the forefront of Research and development,
Innovation, Knowledge Transfer and Human Resource Development in the global
academic terrain, has promoted the core values of education in this nation.
5. UNILORIN is also one of NUC’s best universities in Nigeria. It was
established by a decree of the Federal Military Government in 1975 and is a
federal government owned tertiary institution of education located in Ilorin, Kwara
State, western Nigeria.
6. University of Ibadan (U.I) is Nigeria’s most prestigious university
that is located at Ibadan, in the city Oyo. The university was founded on its
permanent site on November 17, 1948. In late 1963, on the university
playing-fields, with a celebration marked by talking drums, the Rt. Hon. Sir Abubakar
Tafawa Balewa, first Prime Minister of independent Nigeria, became the first
Chancellor of its independent university. The first Nigerian vice chancellor of
the university was Kenneth Dike, after whom the University of Ibadan's library
is named. The institution offers both undergraduate degrees and post graduate
degrees. Admission into university of Ibadan is however very difficult and
competitive.
7. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) began in 1961 following the recommendation
of the Ashby Commission on “Post-School Certificate and Higher Education in
Nigeria”. Ahmadu Bello University commenced full operation in 1962, on the
cites of these educational institutions: the defunct Nigerian College of Arts,
Science and Technology, founded in 1955; the Clerical Training Centre, Kongo,
founded in 1957; the Samaru Agricultural Research Station, established in
1924, and the Shika Livestock Farm, started in 1928.
8. Auchi Polytechnic is one of the leading Polytechnics in the
country, in one of the most vibrant and cosmopolitan towns in Nigeria. She
is one of the first four Polytechnics in Nigeria which was founded in 1963,
first, as a technical college and later in 1973 as a Polytechnic. The extent
law establishing it assigns, to the institution the task of producing well
trained and highly skilled middle level manpower for the national economy in
the areas of engineering technology, science, environmental studies, Management
studies as well as Art & Design.
9. The famous University of Benin was founded in
1970. It all started as an Institute of Technology and was accorded the status
of a full-fledged University by National Universities Commission (NUC) on 1st
July, 1971. The University has continued to grow from strength to
strength with a number of Faculties, Departments, Institutes and
Units. The University offers courses at various levels: Postgraduate,
Undergraduate, Diploma and Certificate.
